Deer Feed Study - Summary
Wildlife feeders and food plots are useful in supporting game and
non-game species populations while improving wildlife
habitat. The below described study was conducted for a
student science project to determine which
wildlife feeds are preferred by deer. The
green
bar chart at the top shows the order of preference. Preference
was
determined by evaluating feeding activity from an overhead trail camera
on a daily basis for several months. The feeds eaten first and in
the
most quantity were scored higher in the rankings each day. A
final score was
determined using a spreadsheet and the results appear in the green bar
chart above. The soybeans ranked first, corn was second, acorns
were
third and grain pellets were last. The study was conducted in the
fall
of the year when other natural foods like acorns were also readily
available. A recent summertime study suggests that grain pellets
are a
top choice in the spring and summer months providing a good source of
protein for the deer.
Deer eat about 4 lbs. of food or (3% of their body weight) each
day.
Like cattle, deer process their food through four connected stomachs
and 65 feet of intestines. It takes from 24 to 36 hours for food
to
pass completely through them. The first and largest of these
stomachs
is the rumen which does not produce acid like a true stomach.
Instead,
the rumen acts as a holding tank full of microbes that digest most of
the plant material and make the nutrients available to the deer.
The
relatively small rumen in deer requires more nutritious and easily
digested forage than is required by cattle which posses a large
rumen.
Consequently, deer are highly selective feeders. Their diet
consists
of leaves and tender tips of many woody shrubs and vines, succulent
green plants, brasses, acorns, mushrooms, aquatic plants and many other
types and parts of plants within about 5 feet above the ground.
Due to
their selective feeding habits, deer can change the relative abundance
of plant species in a given area. As their favorite foods become
less
available, their diets gradually shift to less nutritious and less
preferred foods which can have an adverse affect on reproductive
success. Supplemental feeding may benefit female deer (does) and
increase productivity of the local deer population.
Remember that animals can become aggressive. Bears, squirrels,
chipmunks, rabbits, raccoons, opossums, skunks, woodchucks, mice, and
deer are often attracted to game feeders. Bears and raccoons can be
particularly aggressive. Laws vary from state to state on
wildlife
feeding issues. If you have questions or concerns about feeders for
wildlife, check with your state's Department of Natural Resources or
Conservation Department before taking any action. Also, verify
feeder
regulations for your area with your local Game and Fish Regulatory
agency. Feeders may also attract wildlife species you may not
want to
feed such as bears, hogs, and squirrels. Feeder design, placement
and
the type of food can help deter unwanted species.
