William Scagel Knives - Hunter - Leather and Crown Stag Handle
Scagel Knife - 1932
William (Bill) Scagel is thought of the original custom knife maker in many circles.  Collectors seek out these handmade knives because they represent true early American craftsmanship and styling.  The pinned stag handles and quality steels were shaped and forged to create a functional and practical work of art.  These knives may not have been regarded as collectors items when they were originally sold in the early 1900's but they have become an icon of quality craftsmanship from those early days.

Scagel Knife - Trademark
W. SCAGEL
HANDMADE
1875 - 1963
This Scagel Trademark or Makersmark is the knife symbol shown above and "W. SCAGEL HANDMADE" next to the symbol.

William (Bill) Scagel was born Feb. 12, 1875 in Canada.  He came to the United States in 1900 and set up his blacksmith and knifemaking shop in Michigan.  The city of Muskegon's 1920 directory lists him as a "cutlerer, maker of surgical instruments and and metal fabricator.  He later moved to Fruitport, MI on Spring Lake where he made knives and axes which were sold through sporting goods retailers of the time like Ambercrombie & Fitch of New York, Von Lengerke and Atoine of Chicago, PAcific Arms of San Francisco and Alcook, Late & Wetwood of Toronto and London, England.  He stamped his work with corresponding trade names of A&F, VL&A and VL&D.  He made knives from Timken bearing races and swedish steels.  The above summary is from "Pioneers of Modern Hand-Made Knives - Scagel Knives"  by Dr. James Lucie.
