(from an article by Edwin Granberry)
“... There are not many “Randall Made” knives. Somewhere in
London an air-raid warden carries one of them at his belt; two others
are somewhere in England. One is in the possession of an Alaskan
bear hunter, and a Canadian guide uses a No. 19 for skinning
beavers. A fourth is with an Army major in Greenland. Here
and there one will be found, for they are designed and created by the
hand of a single individual. Each one of them comes into being as
a separate entity, requiring hours of pains-taking labor from the
erect, dark, hazel-eyed young Scotsman who makes them as a hobby.
Sportsman himself, he is able, by some Merlin-like legerdemain, to
infuse into this implement of the sportsman the lure of the woods and
waters. It is impossible to handle one of these knives without
hearing the slap of waves against a birch canoe, with out smelling the
balsam smoke of a camp fire.”
“But a knife, it would seem, is just a knife. Yet when a handmade
article has lavished on it the skill and imagination such as was
practiced by the Italian craftsmen in metals in the 16th Century, that
article becomes a work of art. And such an article is each one of
these Randall knives.
“They are first of all, to be sure, practical, highly specialized
cutting instruments, diamond hard, masculine as a stag. But into
their aggressive sturdiness has been forged a beauty -- achieved by
subtilty of blade line as well as a mosaic-like treatment of handle
inserts -- which stamps them as collectors items. And into
collections many of them are likely to go some day, as illustrations of
an art that has not been practices with more imagination since the days
of chivalry, when man wore his side arms as a badge of his rank.

Model 14 Brown Micarta.
This Randall Knife has been in storage since 1964. Whetstone is
double
sided (two grit) marked "Combination Chrystolon Made in the U.S. of A.
Note from the original owner: "When I ordered the knife in 1964,
I
paid $30 for it, and thought it was an absurd amount to spend on a
knife. In retrospect maybe it wasn't so expensive after all!
