Crossbows: Useful Tips and Safety Measures:

Crossbow Shooting Distance:
The maximum range of a crossbow is similar to a typical compound bow which can shoot accurately and with enough force out to about 50-55 yards.

Crossbow Maintenance:
  • Rewax the string every 20-25 shots.
  • Use no-scent rail lube on the rail to reduce string friction.
  • Do not dry fire your crossbow (firing without a bolt or arrow loaded).
  • Discharge the bow by shooting the bolt into a small, portable target. Discharging the crossbow without a bolt can be destructive to the string and the limbs.
Safety:
One of the most common injuries to crossbow shooters results from a thumb or finger being placed above the top rail.   The result is the string impacts the finger and removes the portion resting above the rail.  First time shooters must be briefed on the mechanism and how to avoid injury.

Another common crossbow anomaly occurs when the limbs do not have room to expand outward and hit against a limb, part of a stand or other fixed object.  The limb reacts the force from the fixed object back to the shooter causing a severe and unexpected jolt.

Shooting:
The arrow must be resting firmly against the string when the trigger is pulled.  Otherwise, the string impacts the back of the arrow with extreme force and can split the arrow.

Never try to release the limbs from the cocked position in any way other than firing the crossbow.  Do not dry fire the crossbow.

Cocking mechanisms are not designed to uncock the crossbow.  A crank should never be used to relieve stress on a cocked crossbow.  If and when the crank slips out of your hand, the device rotates out of control and can damage anything in its path.

When allowing others to shoot your crossbow, take time to educate them and make them aware of the safety concerns, potential hazards of proper techniques.
